Medical students are welcome on our medical missions. Medicine in Action is currently in the process of initiating a scholarship program for medical students. This program, The Sugar Scholars, was started in honor of Alton "Sugar" Chong whose life of service was the inspiration behind Dr. Deborah Chong's decision to pursue international medicine. Sugar was known for his charity work in Jamaica. Even during his struggle with cancer, he continued to deliver food to homeless people until he was no longer physically able; helped with the renovations at Ozanam Home for the Aged, as well as had volunteer projects with St George's College and Immaculate Conception Convent. The "SUGAR SCHOLARS" will involve sponsoring American medical students to experience our missions in Jamaica and Jamaican students to experience our missions to Tanzania. We hope to have our first scholars in 2009 and are currently accepting donations. If you would like to donate to the scholarship program, you can send checks to: Medicine in Action 1009 Marview Ave Los Angeles, CA 90012 Please indicate on the check that you would like your donation to be used for the scholarship program. Medical students who would like to apply should contact Dr. Deborah Chong at debbie@medicineinaction.org |
